Interview with Cheryl [Jaymii’s Mum]

Today, we want to share with you the inspiring journey of Jaymii, a teenager who defied the odds and found new possibilities through an iPad generously sponsored by Officeworks, one of our valued supporters.

Jaymii’s extraordinary story is a testament to the profound impact that a simple device can have on a young person’s life.

Jaymii’s path has been marked by significant challenges. At just three years old, she was diagnosed with autism, which presented hurdles in her ability to connect with others and express herself. Despite these obstacles, Jaymii’s spirit remained resilient, and her family sought ways to support her in her journey.

Life had more challenges in store for Jaymii. At the age of 16, she received an unexpected diagnosis of duplicate chromosome 15 and epilepsy, bringing with it severe seizures and heightened concerns for her well-being. As her family navigated the complexities of her care, they couldn’t help but feel fear and worry. Jaymii’s mother, Cheryl, said, “Fear, confusion and worry for my daughter and the risk of what was going on and what had already been happening with the seizures terrified me. As a mum, I felt so lost and helpless. This has completely changed what Jaymiis life looks like, limited the activities she could do, places she could go, and always monitoring risks.”

Then, one fateful day while scrolling through social media, Cheryl stumbled upon Keeley’s Cause and said she was immediately drawn to our mission. They connected with the story of Keeley, who started Keeley’s Cause at a similar age to what Jaymii and her sisters were. Cheryl said “I loved the idea of what it was for and about.”

Jaymii’s family saw this opportunity of an iPad as a way to help Jaymii communicate but also follow her passion for digital art and expression.

Thanks to the generosity of our Sponsor, Officeworks, Jaymii received an iPad at the age of 17. Little did she know that this device would become a catalyst for transformation in her life. 

The iPad became Jaymii’s sanctuary—a gateway to self-expression, creativity, and emotional support. Her passion for digital artistry has flourished, paving the way for a potential future career and providing an outlet for her thoughts and feelings. Beyond that, the iPad has become a trusted companion, helping Jaymii self-regulate her emotions and find solace during challenging moments.
