Ever wondered, 'Why are you wearing headphones?' 🎧

For children and individuals with autism, headphones can be a powerful tool for navigating the world around them. They serve as a coping mechanism, helping to manage sensory overload and improve focus.

The use of headphones allows individuals with autism to create their own safe and comfortable space, filtering out excessive noise and distractions that can be overwhelming. It's a way for them to regulate their sensory input and find a sense of calm in a busy world.

At Keeley's Cause, we embrace the unique coping strategies that individuals with autism employ to navigate their daily lives. We recognise that everyone's needs are different, and it's important to embrace and support these differences.🌟💙

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects an individual's ability to read, spell, and write. It is a condition that affects individuals across the lifespan, with symptoms often appearing in early childhood. Dyslexia can be accompanied by other conditions, such as dyscalculia (difficulty with mathematics) and ADHD. The Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation of Western Australia, reports that approximately 10% of the Australian population has dyslexia,

Diagnosis of dyslexia typically involves a comprehensive assessment by a qualified professional, such as an educational psychologist or speech pathologist. There are a range of treatments and accommodations available to support individuals with dyslexia, such as specialised tutoring programs, assistive technology, and access to exam accommodations.

Individuals with dyslexia may face a number of challenges in school and in their daily lives. In school, dyslexia can make it difficult to keep up with reading, writing, and spelling tasks. This can impact academic achievement and lead to feelings of frustration and low self-esteem. Outside of school, dyslexia can impact daily tasks, such as reading instructions, filling out forms, and communicating through written means which can make “normal” day-to-day activities a chore or bring on anxiety.

It is important that we talk about conditions such as dyslexia and the challenges that individuals with this condition may face to help break the stigma.

Educating teachers, parents, and peers about dyslexia can help to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for individuals with dyslexia. Understanding and recognising the signs and symptoms of dyslexia can also lead to earlier identification and intervention, which can help to minimise the impact of the condition on an individual's academic and personal life.

If you suspect that you or someone you know may have dyslexia, it is important to seek a diagnosis and to never feel ashamed about seeking support.
