![As we head into warmer months or take vacations in warmer climates, it is important to remember and remind ourselves that some autistic people can struggle to adjust to the warmth and the brightness of Australian summer days.
❌Not only can these be sensory issues, but they can also lead to more serious issues.
✨Being autistic can mean that you don’t recognise temperature changes and forget to take breaks out of the sun.
This may include being so distracted at the beach that you forget to drink water.
It is not uncommon that our children or we have favourite items of clothing that are no longer appropriate for the warm summer days.
😬With the heat comes the dreaded but necessary SPF application.
This can be a sensory nightmare for smell and feel, and it isn’t just a once-a-day thing.
👉🏼There is reapplication!!! I know, we can feel your cringing.
✨Our tips✨
💜Set alarms if you are going out for the day that reminds you or your child to drink or reapply sunscreen
💜Buy spray-on sunscreen or one that glides on that doesn’t need to be rubbed in. Our favourite glide-on sunscreen that doesn’t need to be rubbed in and has no smell is the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer 50+ [game-changer]
💜Take snacks!! Don’t get caught out waiting in a long line for fish n chips, bring snacks to get you through. Set the alarm to order lunch earlier than usual to beat the rush.
